HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The nsual monthly meeting of the Council was held lost night. Present: Cm.' Knox (actihg-Majfor, in 'the chair), Edgecnmb», Tippen. Scott, Bach, Sandes, Philip, and Dey. t Railway Reporm.— Mr 3, .Vatic, forwarded* copy of petition to ' Parliament; requesting that signatures be obtained.— Cr. Sandes moved that the mayor sign the petition on behalf of the council. They all felt that reform in railway management was badly required, and though they might not agree with Mr Vaile in everything, he felt sure that that gentleman would do good. — The motion was seconded by Cr. Tippen and carried unanimously. Piako County Council.— A letter was read from the clerk of the Piako County, thanking the council for the use of the chamber, and intimating that next meeting would be held on Thursday, the Bth, *t 1.30 p. m. • • _ Mb Le Quesnb's Assessment.— The 'Town Clerk reported that he, had been informed by Mr Morthcroft, Judge of the Assessment; ' Court, that €h? amount for whioh Mr Le Quesrie was assessed w.» £130, not 'filOO, as reported. Th» figures wore copied from those of the valuator. — Several councillors were of opinion that the amount was £100.— Cr. Scott presumed that the Council could remit the £30.— The Town Clerk «iid such a step was premature until the Council struck the rate.— The acting-Mayor said Mr Le Quesne could approach the Council by petition when the rate was struck. Remission op Rate.— Mrs T. Vincent wrote,- asking that one-half the amount of the rate of lot 274 be remitted, as the home formerly standing on it had been destroyed by fire. The amount of the rate was 30s ; and applicant asked that 15s be remitted.— On the motion of Cr. Edgecumbe, seconded by Cr. Sandss. the application was granted. , Public Buildings' Site.— Mr F. R. Claude wrote offering site for public buildings between Mr Knoxs store and Church of England at £2 per foot. He also suggested that the trustees of General Galloway owned a suitable site which he would be glad to negotiate for. pThe actinir- May< >r said the council had already selected a site in land of their own. The letter was received. Works Committee.— The Works Committee reported on several _ small road works executed since the previous meeting. They reported that No 1 road near the bridge was in a very dangerous state, and called for immediate attention.— Cr. Sandes.wished to know how many times, the pipes leading to the water-trough at the east end of the traffic bridge had been moved. It seemed to him that it was a vory expensive job, whereas it ought to be a very simple matter.— Cr. Tippen said it was twelve months ago since the pipes were ,, lifted. They had been moved throe times altogether. They occasionally got choked, and had been pnt fight at very little expense. — The report wins received and adopted.— lt was resolved to call for tenders for reforming and putting in order No. 1 road from the top of the hill to the bridge, and at the suggestion of Cr. Sandes it was agreed to write to the Waipa County Council drawing the attention of that body to the condition of the approach on the other side.— Cr. Edgecumbe said the Waipa Council had agreed to attend to approaches, fnd Cr. Tippen was under tho impression that tenders had been called for this particular work.— lt was agreed to hold a meeting of the council to open tenders in a fortnight, Cr. Sandes agreeing to prepare specifications. Sohooi.-housk Bridge, Hamilton East. — Cr. Sande* reported that some repairs were needed upon the bridge. The con* struction was faulty, and what was wanted was a good man, who thoroughly understood the work, to carry out the affair. — The matter witt left in (ho band* of the works committee, Cr. Sandes agreeing- to aswajb.; ( < ' . ' Accounts.— Accounts amounting to £30 odd were passed for payment. Overdraft. -'-T-he acting Mayor reported that the overdraft npw stood at £485 2s 4d. Extraordinary, Vacancy,— The Town Clerk reported that afl Cr. Frear had been absent from four regular meetings, his seat was vacant, and it was resolved to take the necessary steps to fill the vacancy. I ' A Case for Charitable Aid.— The acting-Mayor reported that an application had been made to him by a resident, who was suffering from cataract, for assistance to proceed to Auckland for medical treatment. After some discussion it was agreed io'send the man to Auckland for treatment by Dr. Philson, Cr. Scott; dissenting. The latter claimed, tfiikfc th»:trian should be sent to the hospital, but against this it was urged that the applicant was not destitute, m he, had property. Besides this it was held that as the council had declined to contribute towards the hospital fund, they could not well claim to send patients there. Cr. Scott said tho subfeldieis Had been withheld, but Cr. Sandes said tho subsidies had not yet been paid by the Government. Furze Nuisance.— Th<? Works Committee were authorised to -have the furze down in Collingwood-streojb, removed as tf ar as necessary. ' Return ov Revenue and Expenditure. — Cr. Sandes moved "That a return be prepared, to be presented at next meeting, snowing (1) the amount of revenue separately for the years ending March -31st, 1885, and March 31st, 1886; (2) the amount of expenditure for the two years, separately,, for the following items :— Salaries (not including foreman), valuation,, rate collecting, office expenses, interest, general (works on streets, &c.)." He said many people outside were anxious to know how the borough revenue was expended. He knew that the information could be. obtained from the books, but he wanted to put it before the ratepayers in a conpiso form. The motion was carried, and the Council rose. ______________
