THE TRUNK RAILWAY.
Mr Covte-s' contract for the first section of the Truuk Railway is drawing to a. clow. Si\ -weeks ought to see the earth? work and bridges completed. The Puniu t brjdgd (330 foot long) and the M uuaoron^> bridge (100 fest Ion?) are finished, and the Wai pa- bridge (120 feet) is in a fair way ti completion. The»e bridges are of wo.id, with iron girders, and are very subitiutiil structures. What will delay the completion of the contract is the work on tinKawiv swamp. This lies in the si\-ir.i!n formation contract, in tho middle of Mi Coates section, let t'> tho natives. Tli«> <wamp is about 60 chains wide, and though the Maoris have been tipping stuff 1:1 from both sides for the pa<t tun ninths th^v have ju-«t got about half the job done. The ground ia so bojfgy th.it tha earth disippears and ro-appear.s chains away, reminding one of the Chat Moss achievement of Stephenson. The rail* will be laid down to the swamp, which is eight milo* from Te Awamutu, in the course of a munth.
