SINGULAR APPLICATION.

A singular application was made to the Coventry Hoard of Guardians, trie other day. The master of the workhouse stated that he had received a letter from a lady and gentleman, who did not desire to have their names disclosed, asking to be allowed to adopt a child, which was expected to be born shortly in the workhouse. The conditions of the adoption were to be that the mother was not to see the child at all, that she was to renounce all claim to it, and that immediately after birth it should be sent to applicants, whom the mother was not to know. The master reported that the mother-expectant had intimated her willingness to part with her child on the conditions named ; but the guardians, characterising the proposal and its acceptance at most unnatural, sternly declined to allow the suggested arrangement to be carried if the woman remained in the workhouie under their control.
