CAMBRIDGE TOWN BOARD.
5 The monthly meeting of thn Cambridge p Town District Board was held on Tuesday, ' 9th instant, at which the following comt missioners were present :— Messrs J. Hough1 ton (chairman), Asher, Hewitt, Gillett, and • Hughes. Correspondence.— The Clerk read a ' letter to Mr Fitzgerald, collector, request- ' ing him to refund to the board the value of two dog collars for dogs registered by Mr ( J. R. S. Richardson, and his reply stating that Ciipt. McPherson, of the Cambridge Road Board, claimed the right of register- - ing the said dogs for the latter body. — The . board were of the opinion that as Mr I Richardson lived within the town bounf daries he must register hi& dogs with the ) town board, and it was resolved that a de- , mand be made for a refund of the fees. The Railway Time-table.— The Clerk : reported that, as instructed, he had written s to the members for the district, Messrs ) Whyto and Lake, enclosing copies of The • Waikato Times containing the report of ) the late public meeting held on the matter, ■ and that he had sent a bimilar copy to Mr > Hudson, drawing his serious attention to • the expressed wishes of the meeting. Mr s Hudson's reply was to the effect that as the ' resolutions adopted had been transmitted to i the General Manager, the matter would re- • ceive every consideration from Mr Maxwell, I and Cambridge would be allowed a timei table commensurate with the requirements • of the other districts.— Mr J. B. Why to, i M.H.R., wrote to say he had urged the matter on the Minister for Public Works asking him to continue the bi-daily train ser\ice. — Mr Gillett said that it was asserted they now had a service of two . daily trains on three days of the week from here, but that provided no connection with the second train from Auckland. The only , thing they could do would be to run a coach to and from Hamilton. He quite • failed to understand the meaning of the now service, as trains were coming in at in- | comprehensible hours and quite empty. — . Mr Hewitt thought Mr Hudson was simply trying his best to centre everything , in Hamilton.— Mr Gillett moved, that in the opinion of the board Mr Hudson's reply is very unsatisfactory. He did not think it ; advisable to let the matter drop. The large , property owners ought to wako up and : keep agitating the subject.— Mr Hewitt said they already saw the effect of the alteration i in the manner in which the mails were now dealt with.— The motion was adopted and Mr Gillet undertook to draft a resolution ', bearing further on the subject on which the board could continue to take action. Educational.— The following letter was received from the Premier and ordered to lie on the table. Premier's Office, Wellington, 25th February, 1886. Sir,— Upon his return to Wellington yesterday, the Premier received from the Hon. Mr Richardson a- memorandum relative to a proposed Amendment of the Municipal Corporation* Act, so as to give power to local bodies to borrow money for school buildings, which was brought under Mr Richardson's notice by a deputation, introduced by you at Cambridge, on the 12th January last. Mr Stout has now directed me to inform you that the matter will bo considered.— l am, Ac. Alex. Willie, Secretary. The Chairman, Town Board, Cambridge. Finance.—- The Clerk reported that since the last meeting £115 of rate* had been collected. The debenture for £70 had been paid, and he expected to get in a large portion of money this week, as about £85 was still overdue. The accounts, amounting to £120, passed for payment at last meeting were still unpaid.— Mr Gillett suggested the members of the board should give their names to a " little bill," to help them on for a while.— The bank overdraft was stated to be £700, the annual income £745. After the Ist of April the rates for the current year would be falling in, which would place the Board in » more healthy financial position. In the meantime, it was decided not to enter upon any new works. The Foreshore.— The W. S. N. Co. offered £20 for the foreshore up to 31.st December last, and to pay that sum annually. The Chairman said Major Wilson had admitted they would not contest the legal point raised, and that the Board should be paid as the Company used and cut up the roads. — Mr Gillett moved that the offer be accepted, or they would get nothing. Seconded by Mr Asner and carried. Accounts.— The following accounts were ?assed for payment.— J. Bates, £22 10s ; 7. Murphy, £2 3s lOd ; W. J. Souter, £8 Is 8d ; Ryan, £4 Us 4d.
