A SONNET.

A yellow moon, slow rising through the trees, Dropping long shadows o'er the quiet earth, Sweet inarticulate voices in the breeze, Of sudden birth and death, of pain and mirth ; And breathings deep of meadow-cropping kine Knee-high in clover, and the distant cry Of some belated lamb ; a long faint line Of gl>ry in tho West, so loth to die. I, walking thro' this, fairy land of mine, Fronting the inoun, udown the meadow slope, Felt a child's little fingers these entwine. Stoopmsr, I kint him, and rose up to cope With the world, fearless made, with peace divine Welling within my heart, where was not hope ! Wuikatn.
