Melbouknk, Feb. 9. The Government have received a communication from Mr John Pender, on behalf of the Eastern Extension Cable Companies, undertaking on the Ist of July to make a reduction of one shilling and fourpence per word on messages between New Zealand and Australia, with a further reduction should the proposal of the company for a lengthened subsidy be complied with. The casualties occasioned by the explosion at the Ballarat Ice Company's works are even more serious than at first supposed, as several fresh cases of injury have come to light. The Board of Conciliation, which was appointed to settle the difficulty between the wharf labourers and tho employers, have arrived at a compromise by the casting vote of the chairman. A revision of the rates of pay has been agreed to, a small increase being made in some instances, and in others a slight reduction. The Rotomahana left this afternoon for the Bluff.

Hobart, Feb. 9. It is expected that a reconstruction of the Tasmanian Ministry will shortly take place, as the Hon. Adyc Douglas, the present Premier, is about to proceed to England as Agent-General for the colony. Arm ed, this morning :—The Arawa. Hlu; left for New Zealand in the afternoon.
