AUSTRALIAN. [REUTERS TELEGRAMS.] Brisbane, January 30.

A telegram has been received by the Premier, Mr Griffiths, from Mr Fender, chairman of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company, ia which he states that in consequence of the refusal of the Indian Government to lower the tariff on telegrams passing over its lines, the directors of the Eastern Company cannot see their way clear to effect any substantial reduction on mes» sages to Australia without assistance from the colonies. Mr Pender otters a reduction of 2s 6d per word on condition that those colonies which at present do not contribute pay a share of the subsidy, and provided also that the contract with the company shall be extended for a period of 20 years from the present time. Should that be the case, the company will endeavour to bring about a larger reduction of rates.

Hobart, January 30. The delegates from the various colonies at the Federal Council were invited to a picnic to-day, and were entertained in the evening by th© Mayor of Hobart.

Melbourne, January 30. The second day's racing of the Geelong Club was marred today by a fatal accident, Hunt, the veilknown jockey, being killed in the steeplechase.
