After haying for some time been draw* ing salaries in excess of the £5000 a-year paid to the Prime Minister and the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the " twin secretaries" of the Royal Liver Friendly Society have graciously consented to forego their commission of 2£ per cent., on condition of being paid £3000 per annum each. This is a considerable deal more than the country pays to the Post-master-General and the President of the Board of Trade ; but as it means a substantial yearly saving to the society of over £5000, we must congratulate the members on having made a good beginning at their Liverpool meeting. But whether this gathering, at whioh (according to a local paper) " not a soul beyond the front rail of the platform could distinguish a word," can be considered in any sense representative of opinion, we must leave to the judgment of our readers. Many, no doubt, will be disposed to think that the whole proceedings wero pre-arranged ; otherwise such a proposal as the payment of £60 a week each to tho secretaries, and £17 a week each to the six comir:tteemen, would soarcely have been passed without a word of comment.—Lloyd's.
