Clever Capture of the Thief in the King Country.
Our correspondent writes on the 21st :— Constable Joues effected a clever capture yesterday, in arresting a half-caste named lioani Warena for whom a warrant had been issued, charging him with having bmken into the btore of Mr J. D. Hill, nt Alexandra, and stealing therefrom a shawl and money amounting to some £3 odd on Tuesday night or early on Wednesday morning la«t. It appears that on Mr Hill being aware of his premises being broken into and liii lo«s, at once placed the matter into the hands of Constable Jones, who on enquiry, found that a person answering the description of Warena, had been loitering about the t>l<>re on Tuesday even ing, ana had been seen outride it at a very late hour. At an euly hour Constable Jones, accompanied by Trooper Shanaghan proceeded up-couutry to look for the suspected party, and received information at Mr Elba's store that he had been there and purchased a bridle for which he paid 7s Gii all in copper (some 30s worth of copper coin was amongst the money stolen) knowing that native hor»e racing sports were about to take place at Kangatiki, Tawbiuo's old settlement above Otorohanga, the constables provided thither and met and arrested their prisoner, who denied all knowledge of the robbery, and returned with him to Alexandra without let or hindrance from any of the other natives present. The prisoner Hnani Warena {John Warren), was brought up this morning before Mr F. C. Gertnann, charged with the offence, and on the application of CoDstablo Jones, whs remanded until Saturday next. This arrest and apprehension of a native so far m the King Country is a very noticeable event. The fii-.t I think in which the law has been vindicated by a Government servant. In Winiata's case it was one of his own people who made the capture. Constables Jones and Shanaghan are deserving of great praise for their pluck in making tho arrest and running down th«ir man so speedily.
