In presenting the annual accounts and balance-sheet to the general meeting of subscribers, your committee would beg to draw attention to the fact that the sum of £8 2s only has been paid in as subscriptions, a sum not half sufficient to meet the expenses of lighting the rooms and paying the wages of the caretaker of the institution. If, therefore, the public library is "to exist at all, not to nay progress, each member must help the committee in soliciting new members as much as possible. There is a very large outlay in supplying all-comers with the very be3t pipers and periodicals, viz : Once a Month, The English Illustrated, The Penny Illustrated Paper, Punch, Home News, Illustrated London News, Scientific American, seven daily and weekly papers, and seven monthly papers, several of which are illustrated and pictorial, and it will be for the new committee of management, when elected at this meeting, to decide whether this Urge expenditure shall be continued. The Government subsidy last year was £13 13s 7d, this year it will be only between £3 and £4, according to the declaration made and tent away by the hon. secretary, which declaration haa to leach Wellington before the expiration of this month. The accounts will show the income and expenditure, and prove the necessity of assistance from everyone inter"- *e I. The Dumber of names on the books is 63, and t ie total number of books in tha horaiy i 220, besides a few magazines and others. On trie motion of Mr D. Salmon, the members of the outgoing committee were re-elected, with the addition of Messrs A. Swarbrick, Tippen, and the mover. The Mayor for the time being was appointed chairman of committee on the motion «f Mr Peat.
