Sir,— The Maungatautari Block, with all its ancient traditions of former deeds of valour, including the heroic charge of the 400 at the great battle of " Taumatawiwi," — but, what is more to the point, Maungatautari, with its noble wooded mountain tops and fertile slopes, appears to be doomed to fall into the hands of private individuals. Is there influence aud patriotism in Waikato sufficient to save this noble mountain from desecration and make it a public domain ? The present drought in Waikato will not have been an unmixed evil if it will lead the public to see the vital importence to them of saving for the present and future populations of New Zealand this one and other forest-clad mountains, such as Karioi, Hakarimata, Pirongia and Te Aroha, and by preventing the denuding them of their forests, confer a lasting benefit upon Nga hda a te Katoa.
