Special Trains and Reduced Fares.
The secretary of the racing club hag been in communication with the Traffic Mannger of the railways, Mr Hudson, in the matter of special trains for the l-aca meeting on the 29th inst., and the result has been that specials will be run at lower fares than at any time before. The following is an extract from a letter which he received from Mr Hudson on Thursday : — Sppcial trains leave Auckland at 7 a.ni. and arrive at Te Awamutu at 12.35 pan ; Mercer, 8.40 a.m., arriving at Te Awamutu at 12 noon. The fares from Auckland, Newmarket, and Onehunga will be 9s Ist class, Gstid 2nd class, available for day of issue only. Tickets from these stations available for three days will be issued at the following ratps :—lst: — 1st class, 17s ; 2nd class, 12s Gd ; Mercer to Te Awamutu for day of issue only the fares will be, Ist class, 7s ; 2nd class, 5s 3d ; and from Huntly, Ist class, 5s ; 2nd class, 3s 9d. From 'other stations Saturday return tickets will be issued." These fares are sufficiently low to attract a great number of visitors from the city, and the rates for the tickets extending over three days are very reasonable also. At any rate we have never had such concessions from the Department before. Wh.it with the splendid entries and the low railway facea, the cawing meeting bids fasr to be the tnosfc successful yet held here. Last year the fares from Auckland were 153 and 10s for Ist and 2nd class, respectively, and then there were a great number of passengers, so that this year we may expect double tho number,— (Own Correspondent.)
