Election Matters. Auckland, Friday Night. It is reported that Mr Hamlin's heat will be contested by Major Harris, and that for Franklin Nirth, Mr Auckland will meet a doughty opponent in either Mr Lawry or Mr Luke. The district has lately been canvassed for Mr Lawry. and his chance* are said to be by no means bad.

Gold Returns. The manager of the Kenihvorth Gold and Silver Mining Company has received the following assay as the result of a parcel of five tons sent to the smelting works at the Thaiuca :— Gold, loz. lodwt. per ton ; siher, 31oz ldwt. per ton, which gives, a return of £12 13s 9d per ton. Another parcel of five tons i& in transit, which is expected to gi\ c equally gool returns, in which case the directors will take the necessary steps to get out the ore in quantities.

Divorce Case, Proceedings have been instituted by Robert Fawcett, station ovei^eer, residing in the Waikato district, for divorce from bib wife, Elizabeth Fawcetfc (nea Mercer), on the ground of her alleged adultery with one Downing, a livery stablekeeper at Waipawa, Hawke's Bay, and this morning in Chambers Mr Justice Gillies fixed the hearing of action to take place before him without a jury during the April civil sessions of the court. The petitioner and respondent were married some nine years ago at St. Sepulchre's but there has been no issue of the marriage. The adultery which forms the basis of the suit is alleged to have been committed towards the end of last year, and the respondent and co-respondent are further alleged to bs now living as man and wife at Waipawa. Neither of them has entered appearance in the matter, although they have been duly cited. Messrs He.sketh and Richmond are acting for petitioner.

Painful Accident. A man named John Kyan met with a distressing .icuident thi** morning. He wa*> engaged working a circular t. iw at the Auckland Timber C<Mi|>my's works in Customs-street, wlion by m>iiib means his left hand came into contact with the saw. The first and second fingers were immediately amputated. The man w<is removed to the hospital where his wounds were dressed by the House Surgeon. Kyan did not remain in the hospital.

A Scoundrelly Act. An outrage of a dastardly character is reported from Newmarket. During the absence ef Mr Hatnley, butcher, from his residence, some evil-disposed person threw a quantity of kerosene on the side of the building, and set fire to it. Mr A.rmitage, grocer, next door, found the house in a blaze, and extinguished the flames. No damage is caused, but the escape was a narrow one, Mr Hamley was not insured, and would have lost heavily had the premises been destroyed.
