SONNET.
If in the quiet sanctity of night An angel came to blens, could we behold Without alarm the glory of the light, A reflex from the Citadel of Gold ? God knows oar weakness, and in human guise He sends His messengers of peace and love ; Angels they are, in whose material eyes There shines a light that cometh from nbove. 0 Thou, who in affliction's fire wast tried, Know'st thou that God commissioned thee to bless ? 1 know that the dear Lord who sanctified The lowliest sinner loveth ma not lesi : Else why should I, the meanest of my race, Have lived to see the benison iv thy face ! G. Waikato, 1884.
