Te Ngiha Hoam pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing a bullock, the property of John Brooks, at Churchill, on the 27th October last. Prisoner *aid he had had no food for four days, and he killed the bul lock in order to get food. — His Honour said prisoner knew that he was doing wrong, for he cut up the hide in order to prevent identification. The plea of hunger was no sufficient reason for killing another man's bullock. The offence was a very serious one in the eyes of the law. Sentenced to nine months' imprisonment with hard labour. (ieorge Rawson for stealing £24 2s got six, and Fredrick Harris, alias Johnston, for stealing a horse, <&c, twelve months imprisonment. Matuaknre, a native, charged with breaking and entering, was acquitted. WEDNESDAY. At the Supreme Court tho Grand Jury found no bill ag.iinst Thos. Murray, and a true bill against Win. Murray, charged with forgery. Tho 1 -. Murray was discharged from custody. No bills were found against Edward Downing, arson, and John Wikon, Dougl:is Parsonage, and Arthur Stanley, for forcibly entering. The prihonerb were discharged. The court was occupied all day on a charge of robbery by a native at the Bay of Islands.
Tiik old Duke of Hamilton onco quarrelled with his wine merchant. To spite him the Duke at onco wrote off to Bordeaux. Somewhat ostentatiously, he signed, as a rule, all his three (great titles. These are those of the dukedom of Ch.itclhernult in France, the dukedom 1 of Brandon in Suffolk, and the dukedom of Hamilton in Scotland. Accordingly the Bordeaux wine trader received a letter ordering so many canes of claret, the wine to be sent to " Faithfully yours, Hamilton, Brandon, and Chatelherault." Back again came a reply — " M.X. is obliged to Messrs Hamilton, Brandon, and Chatelheiault for their order ; but as he has not done business with the firm before, will they kindly send him a reference?" At this the Duke nearly choked. Mr J. S. Buckland will se'l at Cambridge on Thursday Jiext, cattle, sheep, &c. He has for private sale 1000 crossbred wethers, and 409 Lincoln owes.
