The application of the Te Aroha mine managers for a reduction of tbf freight on tlio Aroha trninway lias not boon favourably entertained by the Piako Council. A very fine specimen of tobacco, grown by To Ao Ao, :i native residing mi Mr W. A. Graham's land at Tamahere, w.is *hown to us yesterday by Mi J. W. Smith. The leaves measure liliin. by 14in., and wo arc informed were grown since November 2nd last, a little o\ei »-i\ weeks, when the sped was pHnted. The tob.ii.co was sown in a. bed and tianspl.inted into a patch of ti-tiee land, about an aero in extent. The plants are growing \igorously, and with <neiy appe.nance of a good crop. It is. i pity the native-, no not receive more encouragement to grow thin crop, as we think it would be an excellent sotuce of income to them, and the culture ,1 work m.)st .suitable for their disposition. It is clear th.it the nathes cm grow the tobacco plant as well or e%en better than the Kinopeaus, as tune, which is an important element in the industry, is w ith them no object.

Tins gentleman tendered his services as the executive of tho Charitable Aid Act in the Pinko County. If appointed ho would usit each destitute person in every coiner of tho county once a month, reporting to the council the particulais of each case, issue rations .or orders on storckeepeis for luiions to each recipient of relief, and, fmtliei, ho would ascertain th.it tho council was not imposed upon by unwoithy ap i plicants.
