Since Electiicity has been applied for! lighting pui poses, all efloits of inventois ; have been directed to construct a lamp for geneial domestic use. The reason why this ptoblem has till now not been , solved, is that none of the inventors ' could rid themselves of the idea of gas ' lighting, and that all have adhered to , the system of producing the Electricity in some central place, or by laige j machineiy, instead of first laying down . the piinciplc that a Lamp which should | ever become generally useful and popular, must be portable, like an Oil La.np, and contain the generator of Electricity in itself, i.e., in the foot of the Lamp. The Norman Electne Light Co. has at | last succeed* d in completely lealising | this ideal of Electne Lighting, and theie is no doubt that this most impoitant invention will bung about a complete resolution in all blanches of lighting. Our Elect! ic Lamp umh mil hi t Mat htm ii/, C'omlwto) •>, nor any expensive ' outlay, and is neithei complicated, nor disagreeable in manipulation ; all that is necessary is to refill it every four or five days with acid. 3'hr cost of hy/itmy mil be ai ehmp as yas (i cents per houi), and it has before the latter the immense advantage of neither producing the heat, smoke nor carbonic acid, owing to which the air is not impurcd, and lemains at ' the same degree of tempeiature It is ' fuither, absolutely inodorous, and does not need to be kindhd by match, or 1 otheiwise, but simply by turning the ' key, thus tivtnthua till <hnuj > of fue, explosion or sutlocation, as in the case of gas, if the key is left open; and it must be conceded that this ad- , vantage alone is invaluable. It is fuither prefei able to any known kind of lighting for the following leasons : — (1) Its manipulation is so simple that any child could keep it in order. j (2) That the Lamp is poi table, and can be removed like any Oil Lamp, fiom one i place to another. ' (3) That it neither requires the dis- j agreeable fixing of the wick, or the , cleaning of the cylinder, as in the case of i Oil Lamp*. I (4) That the light produced is a soft and most steady one ; that it never ' flickers, and the flame, though being equal in po'ver of lighting to gas, can be icgnliited to any degice. (o) That cioy tlanytr ofjix is absolutely exiliulttl, as the light will extinguish immediately, if by any accident the glass suriounding the burner fahould be bioken. (b") That it will burn, even in the strongest wind, completely unaflected, thus being invaluable lot illuminations, lighting of gaulens, coirulors, etc.
