THE VICTORY OF ELECTRICITY.
Since Electricity has been applied for lighting pui poses, all cfiorts of inventors have been diiected to construct a lamp for geneial domestic use. The leason why this problem has till now not been sohed, is that none of the imentors could rid themselves of the idea of gas lighting, and that all have adhered to t)Te system of producing the Electricity in some central place, or by large machinery, instead of fiist laying down the pi inci pie that a Lamp which should c\ei become generally useful and popular, must be portable, like an Oil La.rip, and contain the gcneiator of Electricity in itself, i.e., in the foot of the Lamp. The Norman Electiic Light Co. has at last succeeded in completely realising this ideal of Electric Lighting, and there is no doubt that this most nnpoitant invention will bring about a complete revolution in all branches oi lighting. Our Electtic Lamp »ntih nttlha Mmhincnj, Cuiuhutuii, nor any expensive outlay, and is neither complicated, noi disagreeable in manipulation ; all that is necessary is to refill it every four or five days with acid. The euU uf lighting mil be as cheap as gax ( I cents per hour), and it has befoie the latter the immense advantage of neither producing the heat, smoke nor caibonic acid, owing to which the air is not impurcd, and remains at the same degree of temperature. It is further, absolutely inodoious, and does not need to be kindled by match, or otherwise, but simply by tinning the key, thus avoiding all tlangir of flic, explosion or suffocation, as m the case of gas, if the key is left open ; and it must be conceded thnt this advantage alone is invaluable. It is further prefei able to any known kind of lighting for the following reasons :— (1) Its manipulation is so simple that any child could keep it in order. (2) That the Lamp is poi table, and can be removed like any Oil Lamp, from one plaoe to another. (3) That it neither requires the disagieeable fixing of the wick, or the cleaning of the cylinder, as in the case of Oil Lamps. (4) That the light produced is a soft and most steady one ; that it never flickers, and the flame, though being equal in power of lighting to gas, can be regulated to any degree. (0) That evenj danger of fire h afaohdehj ixcludul, as the light will extinguish immediately, if by any accident j the glass sui rounding the burner should be broken. (6) That it will burn, even in the strongest wind, completely unaffected, thus being invaluable ioi illuminations, lighting of gaidens, corridors, etc.
