Russell applied f"i a leaso for J2 years ( ,f tho section ne\t tho Public Libiaiy. He was prepared to take it for tho above term at £10 per annum. Ho intended eroding .1 substantial building.— After some discussion Cr. Gillett propo->ud that the allot ment bo put up to tender for a lease of 21 years, buildings to bo submitted to tho board for approval. The motrm was seconded by Or Hewitt and earned. Wells wiotc on behalf of the Cainbiidge branch of tho Hotticilturnl Society asking for the freeuso of the Public Hall for tho meetings of the society and for holding the hliow in M.uch next. He al-o asked the board's consirlci«itu>n to the matter of adding a largo room to tho roar of the hall and removing the back fence to the western bound.uy of lot 017. These improvements had long been contemplated, .uid woio much needed and would bo specially needed for the society's hhovv. — Or. (Jillett proposed that tho usq of the hall be given as requested. — Agreed to. — Cr A-hoi said that for some time these nnpiovemcnts had been before the public— Ci Hughe* said he thought tho board was not in a position to make the improvements suggested. — Cr. Gillet admitted that the inii)i ovemonts were very nocessaiy, but they were not financially m a position to do anything.— Cr. Hewitt thought they might keep the public hall as a separate account and iaise tho money foi the w>>ilc. Theso additions would pay handsomely as they would cause tho hall to bo in moio constant demand.— Ci Hughes pionosed and Ci. (iillett, seconded tnattheimprovcinontsMig ge>t< d by Mr Wells stand over foi the present. —Cr Asher thought a suitable lean to might be erected at tho back of the h ill. He would pmpose as an amendmont that the opinion of Mr D. Kichatdson bo taken as to the probable co--t of tho sug ge>ted improvements, and that his repoit be submitted at the no\t meeting of the board. Tho amendment was carried. Admission jo (JovKJiNMfcvr Paddock. —The secretary of the Athletic Sports Committee wrote asking the board to reconsider its decwon about permitting tho committee to make a eh irgu foi admission to the above paddock on lioxmg Day. The committee understood by tho Reserves Vet Amendment Act, 1.58.">, the boaid had full povvor to giant such pei mi-sion — Cr. <}illctt naid it was evident the board had the power to give permission. He would propose that the Sport- Committee have tho use of the paddock on the 26th inst. on tlie terms named.— Cr. Hughes hoconded. — Agi eed to. Tub Ratin'c Act.— The Pioperty Tax commissioner wiote to tho effect that if the board desiied to use] for local rating the Piopeity Tax valuation now being marie for the three yens commencing Ist Apul, IHSU, it would bo necossary to pass a reso lutiott to that effect.— Cr. (iillett thought they had best mako their own valuation. As a ratepayer ho would prefer Captain Stecle's valuation, hut as a member of the bo.ud ho would prefer their own valuation. — Cr. Hughes pioposed that tho board make its own valuation. — Cr. Ashor seconded. — Can led. —Mr J. P. Thomson was appointed valuer. Puki io Hvii. SnihKr Impro\kmknts.— Mr J. R. S. Richardson wrote drawing attention to the state of the corner of (irosvenor and Kingsticet. It was almost impassable in wet vvcathei. The water also accumulated all along King street, which made it impossible for him to entei his property on foot. Such a state of things was not creditable to the board. A few shillings might also bo bpent in clearing Robinson street through tho town belt, and this road vvouldboagrc.it convenience to countiy settlers. —lt was agreed that Robinson street bo cle ired from William stieet to the extreme boundary of tho domain.— Cr. Axhei advocated that tho corner of (iiosvenor-strect bo immedietely attended to. It was a great hardship to tho people in the vicinity. He would propose that the work indicated by Mr Richaidsou be done, the matter to be left in tho hands of tho streets committee. — Agreed to. PiiorosKii Bvtiung Pf.Acx— Mr J. L. The hoaid had no money for such a work — Cr. Asher did not think tho board would be going out of its way in giving a subscription, say of £~t towards the woik. Such a thing wash idly wanted.— Cr. (.Jillett was also of the same opinion.— The Chan man was likewise in favour of tho board doing something in tho matter. — Cr. Hughes proposed that tho board give £") towards the work. — Cr. Victoria Ito\r>.— Tho following tenders wore roceivod for tho formation and gravelling of the above road: — A. J. Foi rest, £27 for foimmg, and 11 Ul for gravelling ; Thomas Ryan, £35 for forming, and IHd for gravelling ; M. Dillon, £!>4 for forming, and ltd for gravelling ; (J. T. Noins, lump sum £200; Cassidy, €21 for forming, and Its 2d for gravelling; Brocklesby and Stewart, £21 for foiiumg, and ."> 2 5s for gravelling. On tho motion of Cr Hughes Ryans tender was accepted. Chu'ki, si'rkkt tkn'dkrs.— Two tenders wore received for tho formation of ChapelHtreet, but neither was considered satisfactory. It was accordingly agreed to call for fresh tenders, tho samo to bo returnable for tho special meeting of tho board on Tuosday 18th mst. Tho gravelling was lot to Ryan, contractor to tho boaid. Ci.KUtiMi &c. — W. River's tender of 2s lid per chain, for clearing Hall-stroet, and 2s Id per chain for clearing Wilham-Htroct, was tho only tender received. There being no eligible tender it was agreed to call for fresh tondors to be returnable on tho 18th mst Thornton Rovd.— No tondnr was received for the formation work on this road. — Soino of tho mombers remarked that it was very Htrango that notwithstanding the great cry about hcarcity of woik good contiacts wero advertised without receiving a single tender. — It was agicod to again cull for tendois. (iKVVKM.IXG CoNrRAOT.—Thos. Ryans contract for gravelling of 10/ d was continued for a further term of six months. Accounts.— A number of accounts were passed for payment.
