WAIKATO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. Forthcoming Show at Cambridge.
A MFtriNO of persons interested in the above and residing within tho districts of I'ukokura, T.iotnoroa, Cambridge, Matamata, I'atetero and Cambridge town wan called for Monday ori'iung list nt Cambridge, There was not ho largo an attendance as the importance of tho matter warranted, the country districts being hut thinly repre sented. Tho business of tho. meeting included : Constitution of district, election of show committee, and initiating of h)iow business Major Wilson was called to the ch. u rand re.yd tho advertisement convening the meeting, iio called upon Mr Wells, who hud taken the matter in hand, to commence tho business of tho evening. Mr Wells briefly laid before the meeting tho history and objects of the society. It was established about 12 months ago, and ho far ltd operations had been attended witli very great success. One show had been held at Hamilton, the first of what he hoped to be a most successful series. That show had been largely patronised by tho Waikato public generally, particulaily by tho Cambridge people, and it was now at ranged that tho second hliow should bo hold at Cambridge. The Hamilton people, or those connected with tho society had expiossed themselves highly pleased with the great assistance which tho Cambridge people had rendeied, Hid tho interest they had taken m tho Hamilton show, and had therefore assured him (Mr Wells) that they would do every thing in their power to secure an equal if not a still greater success for Cambridge. As an instance of the stiong interest which the Waikato people took in hortjcultui.il matters, tho list of members included IXO names. Tho most sanguine hopes of the promoteis had been moic than icalised by the <niiccods of the fir-t show at Hamilton, Many experts had pionouuced it, probably the best show of its kiud that Indc\ei been hold in tho colony. There wero something hko l.'iOO exhibits, and notwithstanding tho amount of money given m prizes and paid in the way of general expenses, tho society had at present a credit balance of £20. Mr Well.s then referred at some length to the practical benefit derived from theso allows. People intcicsted in horticulture received such valuable infoiinalioii fioin what they saw. They could see tho different classes of apples, vegetables and fruit generally, thoy could nee which weie tho best of the reHpective classes and chooso accordingly. Many valuable lessons woro thus atf aided. Again it excited tho emulation of gardeners and fruit growers. Mr Wells then went into the present constitution of the society which ho showed to bo deficient m point of representation, and laid before the meeting tho idea propounded by himself which tho society had adopted. Thin idea they wero now going upon in constituing Cambridge with tho outlying district a district under tho society, for the [impose ofcarrying out the forthcoming show. Having done this they would then pi occur! to elect a committee to curry out tho arrangements. Archdeacon Willis proposed, " Th it the load board distncta of Pukcriiuu, T.iotiuroa, and Cambridge, the ridings of Matamata and Patetere, and tho town of Cambridge constituto ii local district of the Waikato Horticultural Society, to be called the Cambridge local district." Mr John Sharp seconded. The motion was put and carried. Mr Wells proposed that tho following gentlemen constitute the show committee : — Major Wilson, Captain Soutter, Messrs Sharp, Russell, Kdg.ir, Thomson, Bond, Richardson, Hewitt, Lewis, Brooks and tho mover, with powor to add to their number. — Seconded and carried. Mr Wclh said ho had received an assurance from Mr (»eo. Edgecumbo and other Hamilton geiitlomen wnn took vory great interest in tho society that thoy would do everything in their powor to assist the Cambridge committee Mr Hewitt proposed Mr Wells as chairman of tho committee. Mr Sharp seconded. Mr Welli intended to propose Major Wilson as chairman. That gontloman took great interest in those matters, and ho believed the choico could not bo unproved upon. Major Wilson declined and urged that Mr Wells should allow himself to bo elected. Mr WelN reluctantly confuted and was accordingly appointed. This terminated tho meeting.
