NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING.
A man named James Herbert, engaged in the capacity of bottle-washer at Barton's brewery, had a narrow escapp from drowning last night. Desirine to take a near cut to Hamilton Went he took the road leading from the Royal Hotel to the rivet, but before he had walked far ho diopped down over tho river bank a fall of abont 12 feet, on to tho brink of the rivor. The force of tho fall Htunned him and rolling off to sleep he did not come round until nearly eleven o'clock last night. He at once became alive to tho periloui nntitii* of his position nnd immediately called for help. His cries attracted the attention of fome people near at hand who commumeated with tho police, and HergtMajor Mc(Jo\ern and Constable Wild noon came to the rescue,. The Sergt.-Major lowered a ropo oxer the bank, and Constable Wild getting into a boat the unfortunate man wan soon out of danger. The police are deserving of great credit fur the manner in which they effected tho lescuu
