THAMES DISTRICT HOSPITAL AND CHARITABLE AID BOARDS.
The adjourned meeting of tho Thames Di'tnct Charitable Aid Board wits hold on Monday last. Present .— Messrs J. Kennhaw (chairman), Colubrnok, Greenville, J. B. Smith, and Walsh.— The Chairman read a leg.il opinion which had been received 9"froii) Sir Frederick Whitaker upon qnrstions which the bo;ird had submitted to linn, the «urn and substance of which was that the charitable aid rates wero leviable, and must be proportioned according to the rateable property in the aover.d mibdivi nions of the district. In answer to an objection raised |by Mr Smith, Mr Renshaw Baid that there was no other course open for tho board but to act in accordance with tho lujfrtl opinion which they had before them for guidance, and he therefore mo/ed— "That thin Board demand fnnn tho Piako, Ohinemuri, and Coromandel County Council*, and tho Thames Borough respectively «ucb nut as, on the relative rate able valnex, will produce in all £334 for the four month* ending 3lnt March, 18%, for chariUblo aid purposes."— Mr Greeiivillo neconded the resolution, and it was carried. A committee, consisting of the Chairman and Mr Dean (acting secretary), was appointed to ascertain tho amount to be levied, and to m.ike the formal demands for name. Mr Clrcenville mo\ed that tho chairm.ui Hhnuld take the necessary steps to have all the institution* under the care of tho board, vested in tho board, which was agreed to, and the meeting adjourned. A mooting of the Hospital Board w,is hold afterwards. Tho »urn le quired for the maintenance of tho Ho-tpital up to 31st March, 188(1, being £3H4, it was resolved that a- demand bo nude upon tho four local bodies for their fc r«H|KJcti\p proportions i)f that amount. Mr V Smith entered a protest against tho demnirl being made on the Pi.iko Council. Mr Keimhaw thmi g-ne jiotup of a, motion to tlu» effect " That prou-um be m.ide for a or cottage hospital in a site most >uitublo for the wants of thu Piako and Ohuiemuri districts, and that Messrs Smith, W.ilsli. ,md the mov»-r Iks j committee to report to the 150.nd as to U) the best situation foi the hospital ; (b) the probable cost per annum ; (v) the brst system of managpment ; (d) that Mes-i^ Smith and Walsh bo requested to bring the matter before their respective Comity Councils."— A code of bye-laws was oidercl to bo drawn up by tho Committee and brought before the Board for their appioval.— Thames Star.
