CRICKET. Cambridge v. Hamilton.
Tim match came off in the Government paddock, Cainbndgo, ycteiday, and wa» beyond doubt one of the most exciting and inti'i eating ever held in the Waikato After a very determined light time \v,\* called at seven o'clock, when Cambridge was eight ahead, with three wickets to spare. The total* were : Hamilton, 17<> ; ,md Cambiidge, IS4. In their flint inning* Hamilton scored furiously, and it was geneially thought that the Cambiidge men would never see the way they wont. Wood, whose play all round was \eiy much ad miied, ran up the nugiuficcnt score of 2K, when an effort hkywaids sent the ball into the hands of Longbottom, and a promising caicer was thus brought to a close. Stevens was not far behind with 215 to his credit, and had ho not been so anxious to improve his good luck by an a iditioiul but doubtful run, he might have done oven "better. Mclnto-h carried out bin bat with a sixteen score to his name after an excellent bit of play. Forrest was m his usual good trim, but .vfter putting 12 together he had the iiiiofortune to be caught wit bythacvervigilant Hunt. Rtrton'B pl.iy was also conspicuous, but like his predecessors, hi* calculation was somewhat astray, sending tbe ball into the nneinng fingers of young Forrest. When the Cambridge men went to the wickets the handsome score of 122 which Hamilton had succeeded in putting togethei made them rather diffident of success, but their play generally speaking was not far behind their opponents, though they were 30 short in tlieir total. The bowling of Connolly, Jiindon, and Macintosh dining this inniug-> was \eiy successful, us most of the Cambiidge men were stumped out. Longbottom made some strong hitting, sending his opponents leathei hunting acioss the road, and aftei the honest rt'coid of 17 succumbed to the sto idy bow ling of C innolly. His iilay was biilli.'int throughout, leceiving frequent acknowledgment at the hands of the npectatoi s. Parkes pl.iyed ,i \oiy steady inning--, and succeeded by caicful play m putting together the iespectable record of 14 Pc u son\ play was .il*o voiy much admited, being a veiy »ur« bit as will ah . i bowler as is indicated by his handsome -core. Young Foi rest also showed ui> "ell, his play giving evorv promwe of a successful criclvotei. The Hamilton men soetn to have got their tails .down during then second sojourn at tho wickets, then batting being anything but up to the maik, perhaps it might be bettei to attiibute their non success to the excellent bowling of Pcaison and 1L Stubbing, then balls being straight on the w icket. The Cambridge play improved in tho second innings, Longl>ottom again ci»mo to the front, and Pearson aNo after some capital hitting, distinguished himself by tho honest score of 23. They were, however, m too great a huiry to scoro, as is evidencod by the fact of five of them having been run out. The batting and the fielding of A. B. Stubbing vrero nio->t noticeable, and ho was the recipient of a well-desened compliment at tho hands of Mr Arnold on his retiring from the ground at tho second innings. Towards tho close of the game the contest became very exciting, tho Cambridge men bomg limited to time. Eveiy *coio was tho token for a round of applause. The attend nice of the public »o.s very meagre, notwithstanding the exceptional nature of the weather. Appended are the scores :—: —
