THE CLIMAX FIRE EXTINGUISHER
Al.uu.K number of people including business ii.i-n and other*, assembled ill tho (So \ eminent paddock, Cambridge, on Satin - d.vy nun niii},', to witness a tiial of tin 1 "Climax" hie extinguisher. This is one of tho latest ideas in the w.iy of hie extin gui-<hing medium*, .uid judging by the success of Satuid.iy's experiment is put haps the most successful. The patent consists of two sin dl cylinder* joined togethei and holding an ecjual quantity of watei. To each cylinder is attached a sin ill canister containing a packet of cheniicals. In case of Hie the chemicals an* put into the watci, a packet into each cylinder. The pump is on the double acting principle, drawing fioni both cylinders at once, and tho different chemicals mooting in tho air chamber, caibonic acid gas is generated, by which agency in the water the file ii.deKtioyed. Tho apparatus can bo had in many sues with a capacity equal to almost any cmcigency. I'oi the piupos.es of the expei niieiit on Satin day, a large wooden shed, open at one sidr, was elected. The insido was well satuiated with pitch and kerosene, and a quantity of slia\ ings and other combustible matter was strewn about on the ground. Immediately after tho .structure was fired the flames leaped many feet in the air, and theii suppression neeined almost an impossibility, having to nil appearances got too good :t hold. Tho cxtmguishei was bi ought to bear, and a small jet of tho chemically chaiged water from a diminutive nox/le was diiected on the flames with a most decided and instantaneous lestilt Other tuals weio gnen and pio\ed equally successful. The onlookeis weio sm prised beyond measuie and wei c uni vei s.illy satisfied. They uei a unanimous in their \eidict a* to the undoubted effectiveness of the " Climax," pioelainnng it tho t»i e.itcst success in tho depaitment of fire extinguishes tliey had e\or seen. A tiial was also given at Hamilton last ni^ht in the paddock at the rear of The Waikato Times Buildings. It was in all icspects successful. A numbei of casks filled with light wood and Maturated with kerosene and tar ueie hMrd up and ignited. When the tiro had obt imed a good hold, the hose was tinned on, and the flames subdued as if by magic. A laige number of people witnessed the tiial mid expressed their entire approval. The experiment*) weio carried out by Mr Longlund of the film of Mossis l'oitcr and Co. of Auckland, tho Auckland agents for tho "Climax." Tho Auckland Fire Hi igado will subject the apparatus to a ciucial test at the next firo in Auckland, which, judging by the, frequency of such occuiences in that tin iv ing city, should not bo long. Wo havo no doubt th.it thcii popularity will be so established in Waikato befoio many months that they will bo found in every hotel and privato house which can atfoid thorn. .
