CO-OPERATION AMD THE FARMERS. TO THE EDITOR.

Silt,— Two letters in reference to the Cooperative Association have recently appeared in your columns, higned by "Farmer" and "A Fanner and Shareholder." Both the-e writers seem to be taking a one-sided view of tho Association'^ actions, for and against ; but there is no doubt, own looking at the matter calmly, that a large and important question, affecting both tho Co-operative Association and tho farini rs, has lveen raised. I must confoss to feeling disappointed when the Hamilton branch declined to forward butter, but refeired us to the Fiee/ingCompany. This to settlers w ith only a moderate amount of buttfi is almost an impossibility, freights on small quantities of goods being no high. Thin a large and permanent trade, which should have been secured by tho association, has been handed over to the stoiekeeperH, who naturally, and justly, receive the farmeis' custom in return. So fai, I agree with "A Farmer kind Shareholder" but not when he writer of high ominissioiis, etc. Since the Cooperative Association started, I have stuck to it an far as possible, and have, for a small farmer, done a considerable business both in buying and selling, and must say that everything I have consigned to tho head office in Auckland has sold well, prompt account sales, and never more than five per cent, commission. Nothing could have been more satisfactory. But where the fault lies, so it appears to mo, is that the association will not collect the farmers' produce ; thim we often havo to pay t>vice the freight that we should. I havo paid 2s 8d on ono keg of butter, ditt' on |,cwt box of fruit, and the same amount would have taken double the quantity. Tho countiy agencies should, if I undei stand flic matter rightly, serve tho purpose of collectors for the head office, as well as being dei>ots for manures, seeds, &c. The remarks of " A Farmer and Shareholder " 10 buying 20 per cent, undor co operative prices, must be » mistake, for the association ceitainly sell very cheap, considering tho quality of their goodij.— l am, Sir, obediently youn, WnvrvwifArv Fakmkk.

Professor Black ik is not the only occentrie master the young men of Edinburgh University have had over them. Professor Christison — whose son became eminent in the Edinburgh Medical School —once having caught a student winking in hia Latin class, o~dcred him to stand up and spoke as follows : — "Noanriuking, no smiling, and, above all no tipping of the wink ; for such things are hurtful to yourselves, baneful to the Republic, t and will bring down the grey hairs of 'your parents with sorrow to the grave. Hum ! by the way, that's a very pretty eentence ; turn it into Latin, sir."
