BOXING-DAY SPORTS AT MATAMATA.

At k meeting of the residents of Matamnta, held in the Public Hall, Matamata, at 8 p.m. on the 4th mat., Mr I. Hopkins in the chair, it was resolved, " That horse races and athletic sports be held a< usual at Matamata on BoxinK-day, 1885," and the following appointments were made:— Sports committee : Messrs Hopkins, Dibblo, Higgins, Simpson and Thomas ; refreshment committee- : Messrs Hopkins, Dibble and Higgins ; judge : Mr ¥. Dibblo ; starters to foot spoits and horse races : Mossrs Andermtn and Johnson ; clerk of scale* : Mr T. Harris ; clerk of course : Mr E. Martin ; bellman : Mr D. McCormick. The appointment of handicapper wan left to the spoits committee, and that of secretary .md tre.ismer ti> a future meeting. It was also re*>]\ed " That nil open races be arranged for post •ntnes," and that a meeting of subscribers and thoso interested be held on the last Saturday of the current month to arrange the sports. A vote of thanks to the chair closed a very successful meeting. A sub tcription list wan then o|>ened in the room, and tho sum of £'13 10« was handed in. This was \ery good, considering that only a very few from the home-station could attend, and none from the out-stations \me present, they^>eing quite agreeable to fall in with anything tiansucted at the meeting, and to hand over their subscriptions. It i^ expected that a much larger sum will be available this year for prizett than heretofore, and that should the weather bo favourable, there will be a large gathering from the surrounding districts.
