ATHLETIC SPORTS AT CAMBRIDGE.
Tiik public meeting held at the Criterion Hotel, Cambridge, on Friday night to consider what steps should bo taken in the matter of providing holiday sports for tho foirhcoming holidays wa<t of a thoroughly successful character. There was a large attendance, Mr T. B. Lewis m the chair. A considerable amount of discussion took place as to the day upon which tho proposed sports should be held. Boxing Day was named as a suitable day for tho gathering, but on it being pointed out that tho annual athletic apoits at Hamilton wero always held on this day, the pioposal was abandoned on the giound that it was desirablo that both towns should a«snt each other in these matters as far as possible. New Yeai 'a Day was then named and discussed. It wai thought that as the Cambridge Jockey Club's New Year Meeting would not bo held tins year tli.it no more suitable day could bo fixed upon. Mr Kdgm pointed out that the day was only unsuitable in one respect, and that was ui'-o-inunh as tho uports would olash with tho chuich picnics, no fewei than hvo of which wero held on that day. Speaking for other gentlemen in tho room, whoso beaits were bound up in tht^e juvenile outings, ho did not think that New Year's Day was at all suitable for a secular undoi taking of this naturu, and theiefoio mmie other day might bo fixed. Mr Stewait wax of tho name opinion. It was subsequently agieed, however, that Mm sports bo held on New Year's Day, and the following gentlemen were elected a committee : — Messrs T. B. Lewi«, J.
