Owing to the indisposition of Lady Jervoi*, His Excolioncy has postponed his departure for Christchurch. John CoxN store at Marl borough war, burnod down at 1 o'clock this morning. It wan insured for £550 in the New Zealand Office. Owing to the ab«enco of the prominent members of the Cabinet, there is little ministerial or political nows ntiriing. The Government have not yet received miy communication from the Eastern Extension Company relative to the terms on which Parliament last upssion agreed to renew tho subsidy for the Australian and New Zealand cable. The present subsidy expires in February ne\t. The Hon. W. Gisborne is to contribute the article on New Zealand in tho new edition of the "Encyclopedia Britannica." Sir F. Dillon Bell was requested to write the article, but had to decline owing to pressure of work connected with hi« position an Agent-General. It is alleged by the Exhibition authoritiefc that a number of members of the Legislature who were accorded free passes to the Exhibition while here, not content with passing m all their friendu on these ticket", legard them as transferable property, and have handed them over to fiiends upon leaving Wellington.
