EDUCATION AND THE LOCAL BODIES. [BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
WEi.j.iM.rov, Saturday. Thk following circular ha-, been addressed by the Secretary of Kciucatioii to tho Kdu ctti'iu Jinuids . —"I am to t«ko this op portnnity to bring under your notice the provisions of nuction 35 of tlio Counties Act Amendment Act, p,med liwt i«t<-<ion by the (Jener.il Assembly. It pioudes that County Council*, Road Boards, and | town district* may contribute out of thoir funds for the erection or maintenance of Hchool building. Seeing the heavy charge at present upon loan expenditure for f-chool building purposcH the Hoard might fjirljr link .some dixtnctrt to contribute out of their fund* for the election or maintenance of building. Ferhapi the fairer way would fte to ask thone district* that have already had expenditure for Hchool building purpose* to aid in the extension of building. It would, perhaps, bo unfair to auk districts thnt hare had no school erected to aid in the erection of new school*. In more settled part*, however, when- there has been expenditure f*r school building purposes, districts might very fairly be axked to aid eithor in the enlargement or repair of bcliool building* in district*. Of course, the Minister mutt leave it to the Education Board to decide what that aid should be, and how it ttbould bo applied. He is glad to be able to note that already several districts li«id offered to contribute, and ho has uo doubt that if dintiieU were asked to contribute and did contribute, the ex|«ndituro would bo kept within proper limits, and n deep interest would bo taken in the buildingi* and iv education in general, I am directed to add that thero may come a tune when eacli district w ill have to erect it* own school Imildings, and the money hitherto appropriated for the purijoso may not be continued by the (Jcneral Assembly, excepting to only a limited amount, and this only for districts."
A MKKTisn has been iitld at Siepen, \Ve.stpliali<'v, of all the ironmasters in the district, at which it was unamiously decided to restrict production.
