THE WAIKATO HUNT STEEPLECHASE MEETING.

JriMJK: Mr William Taylor; starter : Mr W. W. Lovel; clerk of (scales: Mr H. W. Moore ; clerk of course : Mr F. D. K. Simile ; stewards : Messrs H. B. Webster, M. H. Pickering, .J. B. Little, John (ince, Win. Moon, Chas. Storey ; lion. sec. : Mr J. S. Buckland. These raee 1 * came off on the course of the Cambridge Jockey Club at (Jh vnnelands on Saturday, and, in every respect, may bo said to hay u more than realised the iinticipatioiiH of the promoters. Though Saturday is not the most suitable day upon which to hold a race meeting, still the attendance numbered considerably over 500 people, representing all p.irts of tho district. The Cambridge business public agieed to observe the day as a sort of half holiday, and thus enabled many to nee tho r.vces who other wiso would have been precluded. Many Hamilton people also put in an nppp.ir.ince, and Mr Caldervvood's coach was well patro niKcd. No doubt the niiull charge for admission to tho course tended in a \erv great measure to ssvell the •ittend.'iuco, and the weather, which was all that could be desired, afforded no excuse to stay at home. On the course the arrangements were excellent, and no bitch occurred to mar the success of the day. Owin t-> some unaccountable preference, the ladies preferred to view the races from their private vehicles, and tho grand stand m consequence was very meagiely patronised. One of the great features of tho day was tho presence of tho To Awamutu Band, under their popular leader, Mr Sibley, and the stewards are to be congratulated on having secured their services. In tho way ! of minor attractions there were tho usual representatives of the under-and-ovor fraternity, who plied their craft to considerable advantage. The grand stand booth, under the able supei intendence of Mr A. Bach, of tho Roy.il Hotel, Hamilton, efficiently providod for tho mutcu.il wants of tho public. Tho luncheon booth was presided ovefv by Mi WlieH.m, who g.no geiier.il satisfaction to his patrons. Tho totalisator was not ho well patronisod as it might have been, the inevitable half-crown sweep being the order of the day. As to the I. icing, though there was comparatively little variety in the entries, tho respective event-, were well contested, .uid excited a considerable amount of interest. The Hunt Cup Steeplechase was the event of tho day, Comedy scoring .1 very pnpulai win. Hilly Sprato'ey unfoltun.ttl2lyc.uuc to gnef at tbo double ditch and bank, othcivvise Comcdy'a win would h.'ivo been very doubtful. Spr.itoley had the Hurdle Race to himself, there being only two starters. Tho Hunter's Flat Kaeo was n wll contested event. Mistake was hugely fancied, but Rowdy, who led from start to finish, closely followed by Monitor, showed that ho had foot as well as jumping capacity. Tho entries for the Open Maiden Steeplechase were very considerably thinned, aa only j three out of the nine started. Kowdy again piovcd Ins superiority, and doubtless instilled hw owner with sufficient confidence to send him for the forthcoming Auckland Steeplechase. Tho tot.ihi.ator dividends weie unusually poor. The stilting is woithy of a passing notice, Mr Level's services in th.it capacity affording great satis faction. Appended is a detailed account of the racing :- - HliM' IIMU'I.K nU'tf, For a piece of pluto valued at lOsovs. Distance Uidiluk, over six flights of huidlos. I'iiitranco, Isov. Mr K. Tuiiibull took In.s horse to tho fiout, and lod over the hist lnudlo. On reaching thu double ditch and bank Comedy was still in advance, and was the Hi at to laud, followed L.y Waverley and Dainty. Sprateloy stumbled befoio coming to tho jump, and not having tune to tecovei himself lit ut tho ditch on tho other .side. Pilling escaped without any serious injui\. Owing to this accident tho race lost much of its uriKiii.il intuiest, a,s Spiateloy was heavily backed t»» win. Ci.iig's Spider (the daik hoi so of the event), though gallantly udden, balked at the big jump, and though he did not appear in tho race after, succeeded in getting loiiud. Comedy continued in cn.ngo over tho road jumps and back on to the couise with Waverley close on his flank, Dainty, Tommy the Rat and Kato following at intervals. Rhodes now made foi tho fiont strongly, followed by Dainty, but Comedy cntcied tho sti.ught hist, and Waverley coining alongside, an exciting finish ensued. Both horses took tho big fenco .simultaneously, when Waveilcy made a determined effort to inn off tho coiir.so, which lost him thoiaco by about half a length.
