WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Thk Governor, accompanied by his Private Secretary, left for VVanganui overland this morning. The lumpen' strike has thoroughly broken up, and the men have resumed work at the previous rate of wages.

necessity protection Wednesday. The inspection parade of volunteers by Sir George Whitmorc took place this afternoon. The full parade strength Iras 956 men, out of a nominal strength of 1100. They were formed into three battaHions, and, with the cavalry, put through a number of menoeuvres, and then marched past the commandant, who complimented the officers on the turn out and appearance of the men. Mr Macandrew hat written to the Land Eoard urging the necessity for putting aside suitable lands for the homestead system under the act.
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. J. Scott and his trainer, A. Austin, have arrived here to complete preparations for a match for £500 aside, Scott t. Hancock. £300 has already been de?( posited with C. H. Williams, and the final deposit of £100 will be made next Friday. Owing to the previous performances of the men in Dunedin the match is exciting considerable interest here. The Canterbury Chess Club have resolved to arrange for a match by telegraph with 12 of the Napier club.
INVERCARGILL, Tuesday. In a telegram to Mr Hatch, M.H.R., re railway rates, the Minister for Public Works characterises what has been done in the way of opposition to the railway by contracting for cartage ns deliberately misrepresented. The first of the vessels to be discharged under contract broke bulk to-lay, the goods being put into railway waggons as usual.
