Sir,— On behalf ot a Urge number of the school committee-* in our respective distncts, we havo the honour to di.iw yom attention to tho injustice done to conntiy schools and to the ehildien of poor patents by the scholaiship i emulations i-siied by your board, embracing as they do subjects not taught m the )>i unary schools for which such scholarships have been constituted. The addition of these subject-* neces-.it.ites e\tia tuition, and for this cither from public or private teachers theie are few facilities in tlio Auckland oountiy districts; and even if pi is ate tuition vtgio available, or if tho masters in our primary schools were generally able to teach Mich e\tra subjects, it would often happen that pour patents would bo unable to pay for such induction, and thus the main object foi which these scholarships are created, vi/., tho giving educ itional facilities to deserving boys in all 1 inks of life, would be defeated Having leg-U'd, therefore, to tha injustice that would be inflicted on a largo section of the community, wo hope that you will reconsider the question with a view of so amending the regulations as best to carry out the object in view ; and wo would sug-go-it that an emendation, somewhat in tho cjucction of the recommendations of the Hannlton West Cqmmitteo, whuih havo received the appuiv.il ot miny school committees m tho Auckland districts, might afford a reasonable solution of tho question. (Signed), G. Uiey, .1. B. Whyto, A. j. Gadinan, h. M. (ir.ice, E. MitchelHrtii, W. Jhioklaiu], V, Ilamlm, I. J. Moss, Kdwaid Lake, Hich.ud Hobbs." — Tho following letter was also received — "Sir,— l have the honour, by direction of tho Minister of Education, to inform you that he had brought nndei his notice the ifim'oulty that jinpils of country schools are likely to encounter in ondeivonring to ob tain tho senior scholarships ottered by your B/urd. On ccimpaung your Boaid's re«u lations with Hioso of the lloird* of Otago, South G.ioleiomy. aiul N >rt!. C.i.itu-Vmry, lie fjnda that yoor demands ate much more
exacting thin theirs. In Euclid, for ex.imple, nm> hook U required in Otago, two in S >uth Canterbury, and three in North CmtiM-bnry ; while your requirements include the VI Book. Canterbury ,iU > ivinnoi quadratic equations, and qualifies the demand by the word ' easy.' Kmnin Hwtory is not required with Latin by any of the other Board". Mr Stout w i^lio- to Mi'.,'£<-»t th it, considering how \uy few country te ichers are as yet competent to prep-iie pupils for n difficult examination, som* such modification n.s tho following might with advantage be made UM —In Litin, for 'pt^ag.'V «my ' eaay 1 p-\-s iges' ' m( l a-.'vign ROO nnrks instead of 1200 to tho subject. And it might be well to limit th» choice of pAs-agtw to the be'it i>\ unples in the ' Principu.' In Algebra, if (]ii uli atics .irn rot lined, let them be einy iM[intion«. In Euclid limit tho requiren,..nN to H > »Vs I. and 11. Mr Stout is of opinion th.it to ichei- c.ip.iblo of imparting ' second try' instruction, and willing to do m> at c\ti i hours w hether for fncs or out of b'!iPM>lcn"P, or from a desire to pro\e their comppti'iiey ami show thcmsslveH worthy of promotion, should receive .ill suitable cncfunagpinont, and he fears that if the st.uitl ird f>r the senior RcholarMiip in placed too high they will be very much diacoiimged.— I am, etc.. Win. .1. Habens. —It was mo»rd by Mr CJoldie that Mesire. Luke, Clark, and Cooper be appointed » committee to consider the correspondfnctj re bcholarship examination — Agreed to.
