They clung to the Iwiat until the afternoon, when Patu and Maki dropped otf exhausted. Ka Wate was rescued by John Aena, a native, who was |u«sin{,' in a cutter, and *eemg Ka W.ite h hignal of di-jtre--":, rescued hiiii and found the body of Maki. The other lias not been recoveicd. Alaki's body was brought to Whangarei.
