He was letuined for JWchenter in 1830, and for Doiset*hire in 1831, which county he represented till i'eb., 184b". He was elected one of the membeis for Bath in August, 1847, and sat for that borough till ho succeeded his fnthei in the peerage, in 1811. He was ,i Lord of the Admiralty in tho Lite Sir K. Peel's admmiutration in 1831-5 ; and, on tho iemov.il from the Hout3 of Commons of the Lite Mr Sadler, took chaige of the Ton Hours Bill. When Sir H. Feel again took office in 1841, Lord Ashley was invited to join tho adininistr.itioti, but refused upon finding that the I'remier'n views would not poinnt him to support the Ten Hours J till. In public life his loidship hsu always acted with preit independence. The chief object foi which he has laboured, in and out of l'.uliairent, has been the impiovement of the social condition of the labouring classes ; no man having taken more pains to inform himself of the actual condition of the 111.1^ of the people in England, and to endeavour to nmplioMto their condition.
