A Novel Charity.
A kind of charitable work that is at present poing on in Paris with marked euccesa is thus described in a French newspaper : " L'auvre de la bouchee de pain," due to the initiative of a oharitftble Parisian, M. Bourricf is installed in a sort of shed, furnished simply with two long benches and a kind of counter. Anyone who likes may go in, and on taking a seat is immediately waited upon by a tidily clad woman, who passes round a basket containing Blices of bread. His slice of bread finished, the newcomer goes to the counter, where he is handed a glasß of water flavored with a few drops of vinegar, whioh having drunk he goes his way without n question being asked as to ftho hois, whence he came, or whither he goes. It would be easy to establish similar systems of relief in the poorer districts of other cities. None but tho really destitute would be tempted by such fare, and a slice of bread and a cup of cold water thus promptly supplied might often save somo poor helpless one from despair.— St. Louis Globe Democrat,
