WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of tho council was held at the chambers, Hamilton, yesterday. Piesent : Messrs A. Piimiose (chaiiinan), Seddon, Graham, Runciman, Rich.udson, B.irugh and Johnson.
HAIifAPC Iolni).- — J. he resignation ot the poundkeeper, Mi Camp, was leceived and accepted. — The Cleik said tho Cambiidge Road Board was electing the necessity roof &c. for the shelter of cattle, and would recommend a suitable person as poundkeeper.
Aurkxrs of R.\r»>.— The Chaiiman repoited that since the last meeting Mr Hamerton, Public Trustee, had w ritten to the council intimating that he must decline in future to undertake the aduntiMiig and selling piopetties of rate defaulters forfeited under the provisions of the Rating Act, unless the council in each c-ise deposited a sum of £1">. By his diicction the cleik had written to Mr Hamerton lequcstnig to know by what authoiity he had t ikon the course laid down, as by the Act it w.is cleaily tho duty of tho Public Tiustee to pioceed as heietofore, as soon as the council had pei formed its p.ut in the transaction. In reply to this Mi Jf.imeiton stated that it was necessary to guard the depaitment agaiiibt loss.— The Chan man pointed out that the effect of tho Trustee's decision, if c.imod into effect, would be to piohibit the local bodies fiom pioceeding umJei the fiafciture clauses of the Act at all, and he had caused a communication to be forwaidcd to the Colonial Secretaiy, thionghMr J. B. Whvte, M.H.R., diaw ing the attention ot the Government to tho action of Mr Hameiton and protesting against the same —After some discussion, the action taken by tlie chairman was fully endorsed by the council, and membeis unanimously expiessed their obligation to Mi Plumose.
Tiik Cvmkridck Biunr.r:.— Cr. Richaidson diew the attention of the council to the st.ite of this budge, which requited to be ! scieued up, pamti d, etc. If something wcie not done veiy l.ujre lepaiis would soon be necessary. Mr Wells liad spoken to linn on the matter, and gave him to undei stand th.it the budge was m the juiiwhction of Waikato. Mr Wells fmther said that the Town Bnaid and the two counties .should be asked to contnbute each a thud of the cost. —After some discussion, tho Chan man suggested that Mr Wells should be recom mended to apply to the Wai pa County Council, who had the nupervi-aon of the woik.
Unavihokiskd Em'KS'dhuhk.— An account foi £13 odd, for winks in the Waelenga distnet was piesented by Ct. Johnson.— The Chan man and councillors expiessed their itiong disappioval of the action of Ci. Johnson m nndei taking woiks without the authoiity of the council, and strong doubts were expressed as to whetin'r the council could legally vote the money. Eventually it was agreed to do so, but Ci. Johnson was warned not to repeat the expeiiment. — On the suggestion of the Chairman, it was agreed to ask Mr Sandes, engineer to the council, to make an offei to undertake the supei vision of all woiks in the Rangiriri outlying district, to be laid before the council at iis next meeting.
Accounts. — A number of small accounts were passed for payment.
Paimknth to Road Boauim.— The Cleik said tho tiding accounts stood as follows :—: — Uangiriri, debit £48 13s lid; Cainbndgo Town District, debit, 9:12 Gs Id; Knikiriroa, credit, £211 fid ; T.uimhere, civdit, £1(53 14»; Cambridge, ciedit, £09 !K 7d. Ho explained thnt tho Knikirnoa Road Board was in credit at the bank £<J9 1 Is 4d, tho Cambiidge Road Board was in debt to the extent of £320 lOsllrf, and the Tama, here Road Bo ml, £ ( >3 3s 4d. It w\s decided to vote £l.*) 0 to Kinkiriroa, fi'lo to Cambridge, and £K>o to Tamahere. This was all the business of importance and the council then rose.
