An Evolish Bku'ty.— ln front of the War Othce in Pall Mall, London, stands a statute of Loid llcibeit of Lea, bettei known as Sydney Hcibeit, one of the few attempts at sculpture in London worth looking at. When Lord Herbert died in 1801, universally legietted, he left behind him amongst other childien a baby gnl only two yeais old, named Gladys, who in due time grew up to he one of the handsomest and finest women in England. In 1876 she enteied society as Lady Gladys Herbeit, and at once became an acknowledged belle. Standing oft 10m or more in height, she has nevet had occasion to wear heels ot adopt otliei aititiceato add to her dignity ; hei com plexion is brilliant, and her eyes aie d.nk and magnificent, while hei beautiful daik h.ur adds to the general effect. Crowds of admirers fell at her feet as soon as she appeared, but none knew who would be the lucky man until it was .suddenly announced in 187<S that she was to become Countess of Lonadale. Her brother the Kail of Pembroke disnppiovtd so highly of the match that he lefused to sanction it by his presence. It did not turn out a happy event, but in 1882 Lord Londsdale died, leaving his widow with one little girl. As soon as the period of widows' weeds was over, her ladyship again became a lion of society, and waa engaged first to the Hon. Luke White, then to Kd^ai Vincent of the Coldstreams, buf both engagements fell tlnough ; the thiid, however, was a success, and she has now married Earl de Grey, eldest sou of the Marquis of llipon and late Viceroy of India.
