The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

Equal and exact justicr to all men, OJ whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or politic il. Here sh ill the Press the People's ripht maintiin, Unavved by influence and unbnbrd b) fpin

TUESDAY, AUG. 2.7, 18SJ.

Oxk obstacle, at least, to the establishment ot the meat tinning industry by the fanners of Waikato h.is been removed. The result of Mr (liaham's mission to Auckland, -related in another part of this issue, will bo a sufficient answer to the objections raised by Mr Thomas (ioodfellow and Mr John Fisher. Both these gentlemen admitted the desirableness of starting some such industry as has been piopoied ; but they considered that, inasmuch .is the Frozen Meat Company had drawn upon the resources of W.iik.ito settlers to a large evtent, it was incumbent upon that company to undertake the responsibility involved in the new enterprise. Without pausing to enquire into the value of their contention, we are now face to face with the fact that the Fro/en Meat Company does not intend to extend its active operations to Waikato, and if the farmers of this district are of the opinion th.it the industry should be established— find we know that they are — it is clear that they must depend upon themselves. Mr Banks, on behalf of his company, has assured Mr (Jr.iham that the new industry will not meet with any opposition from its Auckland congener, and indeed there is no reason in the woild why it .should. On its own showing the Fro/en Meat Company cannot overtake the large ordeis it has received for preserved meat, and it is but logical to suppose that, if it have any patriotism at all in its nature, it would welcome any sister concern working in conjunction with itself to establish a name and a fame for the productions of this colony and this provincial district. As to the particular form which the enterprise shall take, that of course is a matter which must be decided by the committee at its next and, we may presume, its final mooting, and we do not feel called on to offer any suggestions thereupon. There is a feeling abroad, in Auckland particularly, that the Finners' Co-ope rathe Association should be, asked to undertake, the management. We leferto this merely because the subject has been publicly discussed, and shall offer no comment upon it at the present time, except to remind the people of Waikato that the Co-operative Association has barely sufficient capital to enable it to perform its present functions, and if it is asked to do more, those avlio make the application should give a guarantee of their sincerity by subscribing for the new issue of shares.
