HAMILTON LEGISLATIVE ASSOCIATION.
Thk onlm.uy nipeting of tlio association was held on Tuesday night at tlio Public Hall. The chair wai taken by the Speaker (Mr John Knox.) There were about 40 members present* aud the ladies' galleiy wjw filled. <• After some preliminary business had been tifcinaeted, Mr Veukcr Bindon's motion for the appointment of a cotmmttee to report on the various m-eot pe^ts .it piesont devastiiig the fruit and other crops w.n earned. ThepJfndep ;if tlio Opposition explained tli.it siuee. the last sitting it h.ul been thought desirable to withdi.iw the no conhdenco motion, but he womli] leave the matter in the hands of the (im eminent. ThirFreitfier and the Minister for Fubhc Work* implied, depiecatiny the course pursued In tho Opposition in endeavouring to thnw f h" onu- oji the Government. They ttuo quite prepared to take a division. Mr fjteven-. (Pukckur.l.) then moved .ivote of no-conhdcncc, and made a \igiiinii> attack on the admimstiation of the Government. The motion was seconded by Mr McCullmigh (To M<ita), and suppoited by the leader of the Opposition, who claimed that the ( rQverninent h id f uled to bring down a policy suitable to the needs of the association. Tht* member* for Xgaruawahia (Capt. Beere), and Te Rahu (Mr \V. Lf^uesne)the Premier, the Minister for LineN, the Minister for Public Works, and the Colonial Secretary defended the Government, claiming that the best proof that the Government posM's-,ed the confidence of the House was the fact that every measuio hi ought forward had been c.uiied. Mr Templer (Woodlands), speaking fumi the cross benches, warned independent nieiubeis to be caieful how they voted, for in tscaping Scylla, represented by the Government, they might run upon Charybdis, jjersonated by the Opposition. He criticised the Government and the Opposition at some length, and wound up by intimating that he did not intend to vote on the question. Mr Steven«, in leplying, said the contention of the (iovernnient that all their mea»ure-> had been earned was the strongest aigiiment that could be used against them, inasmuch as the meninres brought down afforded no giouud foi debate. Mr Bindon at this .stage explained that as he did not approve of the motion being biougnt down it that particular time he woulfl not vote. He then left the House. Orrtho question being put, a division vv\n take ft, with the following result : Ajes, 10 ; noes,,' l7. Hovei al members followed the example of Mcshik Templer and Bindon, and rtfrtuiied fioni voting. The result wa.s leceived with loud applause from the Mimstenal benches. Oivthe motion of the Piemiei, the House, at 10 o'clock, adjoin ned until Thuisday, the 27th liUt.
