American Ingenuity.— The progress of science during the last hundred years is receiving a practical illustration just now at New York off Port Morris. In 1780 the British frigate Hussar sank at the spot with a million sterling on board, which was to have been used for paying arrears due to the Biitiah troops. A few unsuccessful attempts have been made from time to time to recover the money, but it is only quite lately that the full resource* ef science have been turned to the task. The Hussar is under 90ft of water, and is covered by a mass of mud and stone to a further depth of 60ft. When all this has been drilled through, there is to be an elaborate arrangement of suction pipes, powerful enough to draw up stones four inches thick, and if these fail, a large pipe oft in diameter will be sunk to the true bottom of the river for men to work in. The inevitable com pany— the "Treasure Trove Company" — which has the job in hand, looks confidently to " strike gold " within a month's time.
