THE CAREER OF GENERAL KOMAROFF.
Tiik Beilin Illustiirte Zcitung of the 2nd May gives a memoir of General Komaroff, written with soinewh.it of an anti-English bias. It says : — " This man, so famous in the conflict of pen and ink and despatches which is now occupying the attention of Europe and Asia, is the second of fnnr brothers, all of them distinguished soldicis in the sei vice of Russia. Lieut.-General Alexander Wissarionowisch Komaroff, ' the conqueror of the Afghans," was born in 1 823. He uas educated at the St Peti rs burg Cadet School, which he quitted in 181!), rceeh ing an Ensign's comniisHion in the Kille Corps of the Imperial Guaid. Thus lising from step to step, he was in ISS2 appointed Governor of the w hole trans Caspian region, and it devolved on him to complete tlie woik begun by SkobelofF of pacifying ' the uni uly Tin conian tubes.' The submission oftheMeiv Tekkes was biought about by Kotnai oil's diplomacy, and he was successful 'in enforcing respect for tieatics and maintaining order up to the fui thest limits of Russian territoiy.'" On the 30th of March last Komaroff " read a severe lewin to the Afghans and the ' behind - them - standing English.' The judicial calmness of Ins mind is e\ i deuced by the fnct tint after the ' incident' at I'al i Ivhiiti, he did not advance fuither, but, iguoung the noisy preparations at London and Calcutta, retired with dignity to Saraklis — thus showing himself to be eminently fitted to keep oider and maintain right." Geneial Komaioff ii, in addition, a learned archaeologist, and entomologist, and h»s made valuab'e contributions to the Caucasian Musrntn.
