Li um.ini s. —The following telegram was lo.ul fimn Me>sis Heakoth and Kichmond on the above subject :— " Have ppi used ,iml conKideied your statement of fact^ handed us by Mr' I'ntii and ndw^e you tli.it no inachinoiv cuhts for laiMtig special loan to \).\y u(f e\istmg liabilities."— (Jr Filth said he had no conversation with He-keth and Richmond beyond laying befoie thpin the statement of facts diawn up by Mr Tuck. ]<o\i> to thk Nk\v BvriKin.— The follow ing letter was recened from Mr J. B. >Vhyte .— Wellington, July flth. Tho Chairman Piako County Council. The hon. the Minister for mines li3s now jiromised to pay two-thuds of the cost of making tho road to Feiguson's batteiy on receipt fiom tho county council of the lomaining third, 1 understand the council applied for this la^t spiing and I would \enture to rccomnipnd tho council to remit the money as soon as possible so that the matter may be closed. Mr Ferguson has con-ented to accept £'.")00 as the total ost, although ho say.s that it has now cost considerably »\er that sum. 1 understand that tho county engineer hn^ ceitihed to wimc £i'2O of tho cost, and that the woik done since can be easily valued. Hoping this may have youi call} attention,— Yoms, &c, J. H. Win tf. A letter was al>o leceived from Mr P. Fergu-on, dialing attention to the fact that se\eral slip^ had occuircd on the tiack to the battery, and asking the council to clear them a\say.--Mr P.witt, county engineer, al-o wiote on Hie same matter. The following account was tecened from MY Pp.ti>r Ferguson : —
Or. Gould undei-tood tlmt there was an undei-tanding that the council should cntiil)itt(3 it-, sh.nc. Tlio council, lie believed, was liable for a thud.— Or. Fu th t-aid theie w,ii no such undei standing. The council had no liability. They did not authoiise it. The money was now foithcommg, and they could help him to get it.— The clerk lead the lettei on the subject fioin the council to Mi Feiguson. On receipt of the Government Riant for tracts on goldhelds, the council vvould pay a thud of the cost. —It was unaniniously agreed on the motion of Cr. Smith, that the council take the necessity .stop-, to obtain the subsidy promised by Government, the whole amount on leceipt to be handed over tv Mi Feigu.son. Enoinkku's Kkpohc Akoha TCidim;.— The engineer of the Aioh.i nding submitted his monthly lepoit as follows .—. — In Mi Tuck's lettei of the 17th, I sun instiucted to \aluo the work executed by Mr P. Feiguson on the lower tiack at Waioiongomai home time last year aud dm ing the cunent jear. It w.mld be nnposMblo to \alue with any degice of accuiacy woik done >•» long ago, but 1 ha\e inspected accounts and voucheis hold by Mr Feiguson on tins special load account, aiul it appeals to me the mattei stands as under, in Octobei last year Mi Ferguson lendeied an account to the council of £423, and Muce that time he has expended on the load to June the llth £74 17s, and he, Mr Ferguson makes a claim of £22 Ss for inteiest on the £423. Making in all the sum of £">2O .")s. Mi Feiguson informs me that the (Jo\ eminent ha\e promised him to pay two-thuds of £.~>oo, if the council will pay onc-thnd of the latter amount. With u'feience to this matter, I would respectfully suggest that in futuie an oiheer of the council should have the hiipervision of the expendituie of so Luge a sum, as I am ceitain a considerable saving of money would lesult. Many and large slips have occurred since the last hea\y lams on the above tiack, and I estimate the cost of removing them and making the load again available for tiaiiic at £45. The upper pack tiack is in a deploiable condition thiough slips and tree- blown across it, lendenng ltuuy dangeious, and pieventing hoises fiom passing along. The main road between Waioiongomai and Shuftesbury has been consideiably damaged by the recent floods. I have just received timber forculveit that I will have placed whero the whole 'if the road will be washed away. A small bridge is lequired to replace the piesent two small culveits between Mr .r.uiseu's and Mr Hunt's piopeity. The eaith is washed away fiom the culvert, and lendeied the load at this point unpayable. Can 1 have this woik done, cost £12? Mr Stanley, contiactoi, for Aioha footpaths, has satis-factoiily finished his work. Mr Quinlan had hniohsd his contract of metalling mam r«ad between Te Aioha and Waiorongomai. Some two oi thiee culveits were required on this road the co&t of which would be small. The mam road through the Aroha township is in veiy bad condition, as also the road leading from the mam road to Wdioronijomai, and the road from the punt and bridge at Te Aroha to tho township. — The report was adopted, and it was agreed to have the necessaiy improvements to tho culvert at Mr Hunt'.s effected. The other mattei s wine left in abeyanco for tho present. Akoh\-Shahkp>dlk\ Komi. — Mi W. F. Hunt wiote again piessing on the council the necessity foi a l.ngei culveit aciobs the load at his place. The pipspnt culvert had been washed away twice within a foitmght. He should take legal pioceedings to recover damages if it occuned again.— On the motion of Cr. Fnth it was agieed to authoi ise the engineei to make the necessary impiovement. Tuk AiioiiA-KAriKATi Tkack.— Mr H. J. Simpson, Katikati, wiotediawing attention to the almost impasbablo fetate of the above track. Several landslips had taken pi. ice on tho Aroha side of tho tiack. Tho pa.ssage across the ranges was acc-oidmgly very dangeious. The wntei undeistood that theie was a consideiable sum of the Government grant unexpended. — Cr.'Smith thought if there was a poition of the giant unexpended, they should write to the (}ov eminent drawing attention to the matter, mid asking that tho woik bo done. He would move to that effect. — Tho motion wax adopted. The County Engink.— Cr. Ciould said he knew a gentleman who would give £100 for the county engine, now lying a Waioiongomai.—Or. Maclean .said he had soen MrR. R. Hunt, manager of the new coalmine at Mnanda. That company was about to coiibti net a tramway, and would be wanting a locomotive such as theirs. -Cr. Fiith thought Mossrs Morrm and Co. or Porter and Co. might make an offer foi it.— lt wah agieed that the clerk wuto to all tho gentlemen named, asking thorn tv make. an.
offer for the locomotive.— The chairman was entrusted with power to act in the matter. Akoha Drvinvgk.— James Clark, Te Aroha, wrote, complaining that much injury was done to his garden by the dram constiucted by the council's late engineer. Vftcr every heuy l.un he had to clcai this dr.iin himself, which wot k ought to be done by the council.— Ci. Maclean thought tho gentleman might go on himself and do the vvoik.— Matter lefened to the engineer to report upon. SLVLr.HTKRHorsn LtoKvsß. — Francis Dibble, Mat.im.ita, applied for a ftlaughteihouso license foi that district. — Licence gt an ted. Pol n d koh Mar\vi y r \. — It was agreed to establish a pound at Matamatn, the council to take the necessary steps on the completion of the work to base it gazetted. Cr. Firth undertook to supply the pound.— Mr I). Skelly was nominated poundkeeper. CAMniunr.F - T\ot\oroa Road. —The cleikof the T.votaoioa Road Board drew attention to the necessity of steps being taken to repaii the main road fioin Cambudge to Noii is' corner. It was generally bad, and at the Gorge positively dangerous. He enclosed an account for £17 2s 7d, amount expended by the Taotaoroa Board in ni.iin lend maintenance fiom l.">th Novembei, 18S4, to 17th January, 1883. Hn expiessed a hope that the account would be pnid immediately.— Cr. Maclean said it had taken all the lates of the distiict for the last twelve yeais to keep this piece of roxd in repaii. The other roads of tho district were neglected. — It was agreed to write to the (ii>\ eminent, again diavung their attention to their liibility for tho repair of this road, and disci inning all liability on the pait of the council. I Cit\i(.'s Ro\n CoNrnvcr.— Daniel F. Ryan, contiactoi for the above contiact, I w i ote, diaw ing attention to the fict that Ins account foi that \\ «ik was oveidue, and .iccoidmglv lerpioted in cnly settlement. — It was unannuonih agieed th.it tho account be paid as soon .is funds weie available. Arcoi nt*. — Se\eial accounts were passed for payment. FiN\Nn\r.. — Cr. Fiith siid he h id heaid from Mr Lu-nach mii) 1)0 would place he £3000 on the ostnn iLjs without condition. — Cr. Chojitnell was \eiy glad to henr it, but letnmded tlie council that they would still be £1)000 to the bad.— Ci. Firth thought that having K"t the £3000 they might then lev y a late.— Cr. Chepmell said that this was the c wise they must pursue. They must stnke the rate. Both Crs. Firth and Williams had Wu\ that if the opinion of Hesketh and Richmond wai whit it pioved to be, they would then willingly strike a rate.— Ci. Filth s.iid this was not so ; what they said was this, that when all other means were exhausted, then they would agiee to the striking of a county Lite. — Ci. Filth then proposed that they should wiie to Wellington to the elFect that if the £3000 voie gianted, the council would then be piepartd to levy a genet al late to wipe oft the lemainder of debt.— Cr. Maclean concuued in this. It was best thatth«y should f.ice the difficulty at once. — Cr. Fnth's pioposal was then adopted. This was all the business.
