WELLINGTON, Tuesday. Am\n named Robert Sellars, formerly waiter at the Empire Hotel, was found dead in his room at Hirrett's Hotel this morning. The deceased had evidently committed suicide by eating a whole box of " Rough on Rats." W. Waring Taylor has been sent to Hokitika (iaol, where he will serve his sentence in private. Wednesday. At the inrjuest on Robt. Sallow, who poisoned himself with " Rough on Rati" yesterday, .1 verdict was returned that deceased died from that poison adminiitered by himself while sutiering from the I effects of drink, with a tider to the effect 1 that more stringent regulation! should be enforced regarding the sale of " Rough on Rats."
CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. The hearing of tlic charge of conspiring to defraud the Government, preferred against Thomas Hough and Robert Dudley, was concluded in the Supreme Court today, The defence endeavoured to be set up, was that Dudley had done the work for which it had been alleged he obtained payment wrongfully, at somt other time than that entered by Hough in inn time day book and ledger. The prisoners wciu found guilty, and sentence was deferred till the eight similar cases against railway employe's were heard. Wednesday. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, Ernest Bnckhol/ was fined £20 for smucgling J),'lbs of tobacco and 300 cigars from the steamer Ulaucus. flios. Hough and Wm, Percivftl were to day found guilty before the Supreme Court of conspiracy with intent to defraud the New Zcalaud Railway Department. The Protection Association met laid night, and decided to request Mr Holmes, M.H.K, to convey its thanks to those members who had supported the tariff proposals of the Government.
TIMARU, Tuwday. The Levels Road Hoard to-day resolved, "That this Board approve of the Government proposals for subsidising local bodies as being the »iinple»t and mt»t effective mode of meeting Axtra expenditure which cannot be raised front ratoa : alone,"
