A is -tunw published by tho governmental Gazette shows that tho number of persons killed by wild nnimala and enakea in 1883 w<n 22 90.5, ns against 22,125 in the pre\ioua year. Of thrsp, 20,007 deaths weie due to snako-bites, 98.5 to tigc-rs, and 501 to other carnivore. The loss of cattle from tho sarno CiViae amouutrd to -17 178 aninaala, being an increase of 771 on the ngurea for the previous year. It ia somewhat remarkable that while the gieat majority of human deaths is set down to flnakes, only IGII cattle are said to h>ive perished from that cause. Nearly threcfourthB of the deaths occurred in BcrgJil and the north-west provinces. Tho nLmber of d-jiißcroua animah killed during thi jear was 19,890, and more than £15 000 wag paid in lewarda. In regard to the fearful mortality from suake-bited, it might bo uuggisted that the government should increase (the rewards paid for bringing in the dead bodies of these reptiles, or otherwise take more active measures for their destruction.
