The Watcher.
The ni^ht was dark and fearful, Tha bksti went wailing by, When a mother pale and teatful, Looked forth with watchful eye. X >w whtfully she gazeth, The boam of morn is there ; Il'-r eyed to heaven she raiaath In agony of prayer. Within that dwelling lonely, Where want and eorrow reign, Her pracioua boy, her only, Liy moaning in hia pain. And death alona can free him ; She feels that this must be ; But, " Oh, for morn I to see him Smile once again on me." A hundred lights are gleaming, From yonder mansion fair, And merry feet are dancing, They heed not mourning there. Oh, young and joyous creatures, One Ir.mp from out your store, Would give that dear boy's features To hia mother's gaze once more. The morning star is rising, She heedeth not its ray, Beside her dead, reclining, The poor, pale watoher lay. A smile her lipn were wreathing, A smile of faith and love, Aa though she still were breathing, There's life for us above."
