CAMBRIDGE TOWN BOARD.

A spkci \L meeting of the boird was held on ThuiMl.iy foienoon. Piesent: — Mr Houghton (ch.uitnan), Cr». Gillett, Hughes, Lew is and How ltt. Thk Timber Company and thk Forf shork. — Respecting the occupation of the foreshore of the W.iik.ito mer by the W.tikato Timber Company, the following communic ition was received :—"ln: — "In reply to yours of the. 9th inst. I am directed to ask if the. board hai the power to lease the foreshore, and, if so, to request that you will produce, your authority, and state upon what conditions you will lease the fore shoie, viz., term of year^ rental &c." Some discussion followed. The Chan man sud the board certainly could not lease the foreshore. The company's idea originally in securing the foreshore was to put up a mill, but they had not got the funds to erect a mill. That ide.i had theiefore fallen through for the piesent. Ho believed the mill idea was only a quibble to get the foieahore for nothing. Mi Louis though the company had been scheming a lot. They had been playing with the board. He did not know what they took the board for in this matter. The Clerk having been applied to said the company wore merely trespasseis at piesent, and as such could be turned off the foreshore. Mr Lewis: Serve them with a wnt. — The Cleik also explained that the board could not lease, but could let foi a term at a a rental. — Mr Lewis suggested th.it Mr Hay, solicitor, be consulted on the m.ittei. —Mr Gillett suggested that a notice had alieady been given that rent would bo chiiged, that the ace >unt be sent in at the end of the month, and if not paid, to be sued for. It was finally agreed to infoim the company that they aie trespassers, and that they would be compelled to remove, but that the board would be willing to tieat with them for the use of the foreshore. Also, that unless some arrangement be entered into, they will have to remm c everything. Chu'KL sriiKEr. — This matter came forward for consideration. — Mi Lewis said it was positively absurd that this matter should be allowed to hang on their hands for so long. They must make an effoit to dispose of it immediately.— The Chairman explained that the only signature now requiied was that of the tiustee in Robinson's estate. As to who was the pioper pei.son to sign. — Major Wilson or Mes«is Dignan and Armstrong, was still a matter of doubt. Maior Wilson had expiessed his willingness to sign as ti ustee if Dignan and Aimstrong appioved of his so doing. Major Wilson w at. further of opinion that the board would not be justified in undertaking the foimation of Chapel street until they are fully indemnified. — Mi Hewitt said he had seen Majoi Wilson Miice on on this matter, and he showed him a letter fiom Dignan and Aimstiong, to the effect that they did notclu.uly understand w hat he (Major Wilson) meant. He would sco them and sno vh it could he donp.
