Montague, .Fancy Emporium, Qupen-.street, Auckland, «md before the l'"ne Biig.idc could aime it had obtained a good hold. Tho effoit-. of tlie brigade were, ho\ve\er, successful in pteventing .vn extension of tho Hie to the adjoining premises, ami a considerable poition of Mr Montague' 1 ? stock Wius s:i\ed, though tho water helped to damage it. The 10-w is estimated at moie than ±.'3OOO. The stock was injured for ±11000 in the South British, £1000 m the Imperial, and £7">o in the Standard Office. Slight damage was done to Wood's dining looms, and Payne's jeweller's whop, the adjoining premises on either wide. There is no clue to the otigm of the fire. Mr Montague, junr., locked up the premises at ton o'clock, and had only readied home u hen he heard the fire-bull ring. For some days past hcveral suspicious characters have been observed loafing about tho back of the premises after nightfall, but ttusiricion lias not fallen upon anyone m particular.
