THE PROPOSED FIRE BRIGADE FOR CAMBRIDGE.
Tnh committee entrusted with the task of fin ivaidmg this important mattei continue in their erloits, and wo have every reason to believe, that boforo ninny month-, have passed a wvll organised brigade, possessed of tho iieccsHai'j' plant, will Ik 1 an accomplished fact. At the last meeting of the town board, when the matter wn* discussed, the imincdmto necessity 4>f uomo effectual means of coping with an outbreak of fire wan generally admitted ; the <.:ily difficulty that mood in the way hemp that of way* and moms. Some of tho memiMTs were unwilling to pledge the revenue of tho town for the purchase of an engine before hist consulting the ratepayers on tho matter, while others contended that the ratepayers had already been consulted, and had given thoir unanimous sanction. It wa*, decided to adjourn the further consideration of tho pioposal for a few days, to give members an oppoitunity of fully considering the course they should adopt. Tho board will meet again to-moriow, when no doubt something definite will be aimed at. The propos.il is that £.">OO be spent in the puichsse of .1 suitable engine and plant, the engine itself costing £X>o. Some people are of opinion th.it n manu.il engine would bo sufficient for the lequnenients of the town, being al-.o much cheaper than the othei, .md moio economical to woik. The manual entrine would cost i 175, it would ruqnim 4G men to wink it, and \\«uld throw 220 gf\ lions por minute Tho ntcim engine would cost would only ruquiru one 7iian to woik it, and would throw 2.">0 gallons ,i uiiuuta. Though theie is a Might difference m respect to c<ist, still, we think, tho «re.itei efficiency of the KteHin-engine is "trongly in it« favour, and the board Hhould li.ue little difficulty in coining to a conclu sum under thii head. As to way* and means, Messrs Wells and Soutter have offered to supply tho engine,' taking the boaid's acceptance, and they are willing to run tho risk of getting the money out of the proponed loan when it in raised. Whether the loan is lamed or not, tho board can uno tho ordmnry rc\cnue of tho town fot this puipose, and according to tho subsidy propoHiils of the (loyorniiipnt, Cambridge is to get £400, and thisceitainly could not bo dovoted to h better purpose. One of the principal foatin ox of the question in inmuance. The companies lefuso to lenew policies owing to the present nnpiotccted state of of iiiw town, and the busings people aie consequently unablo to securo themselves againwt loss. The presence of an efficient bi igado in the town would materially reduce existing premiums, and would encourage tho companies to take risks which they now refu«o, and at \ery icasonablo l.ites. In tins way, thiTcfoie, it is evident that tho cost of tho engine would be saved many times over.
