Kllis, of Kihikihi, an c.cellent machine for chatf-cutting. Messrs Reid and Ciay have lately b«ta c\pcrnneiiUug ui»ou chaff-cutting machinery with a view of turning out a superior machine at a minimum co-t, ,md one too which should mote than hold its own in competition with -unilai machine-. Yenteiday afternoon we had the pleasure of inspecting one of a nuinlier of chuffcutting 1 and baling luachiucs, which was being put thiough a trial piior to its despatch to Auckland. In its construction this machine of Messrs Keid and (ituy's differs considetably fiom tho.se in common use, and the ad\ antages claimed for it aie gi cater speed in cutting and corresponding quickness m bapginj,'. Several patented improvements aie noticeable in the bagging apparatus. To prevent waste of chart w hile bags are being changed, k brake is fitted upon the screw-pres», which, stopping it instantaneously, prevents the chatf being fenced tlnough the delivery box while the screw is stopped to change tlio bags. The machine being piovided with a sinntter-iiddle all sonell and dock heeds m well as dust and smut, and very fine chaff, arc removed from the chatf pioper, and thih alono is an improvement which will bo aiipreciated by ovvneis of stock. The cavinga or long stuvws in the chatf are delivered behind the machine, the dust, &c, uuderneath. The biake on the KCievv-piesD has been ]>atented, us well as the mouthpiece, which is in one piece, mid is easily lenewable. Ihe hi in have made five of these machines, and the leports concerning them aie highly sfiti*factoiy. Messi-, Smith and Son s, c>f (Jieenfield, vvem the piuoh.isois of the Krnt combined machine, and they find no difficulty in cutting and bagginjr 20 tons or more per diem with their machine. The one tested >e«teid.iy has a I2in. moutlipiece, hut alaigei si/c can be made without nitieasing the M/.t! of the frame of the machine. It is claimed for the machine that 120 wellpacked l>.»gs per hour can bo tinned out when the machine is m competent hands, and the quality of the .stun* to be chaffed is good. The whole concern is mounted on foul w heels, and can be easily and speedily tianspoited fiom place to place. The No. 1 ordinaiy chaff-cutter which the film havo been turning out can bo adjusted to tho pmtable fiame and fitting up of riddles anil bagging appai.itiis. A machine such im was tiled yesteiday is tinned out for something under t'OO.
