The Daily Telegraph, in a leading article this morning, upon the return of tlio New South AV.ilcs contingent to Sydney, remaiks upon the terms of dignified congratulation with which Lord Loftus welcomed the arrival of the troops as quite befitting the occi.sion. The w liter dwells strong) on the enthusiastic loyalty to the Queen and .soldierly qualities displayed by the Australians during thr operations in the Soudan, and concurs with Lord Loftus in believing that the action of Au.str.ilia in despatching troops to the assistance of England has practically established Imperial federation, and given the world an assurance ot the worthiness of the Australian colonies to be reckoned an integral part of the British Empire.

The Daily Chronicle eulogi.ses the .speech delivered to the troops l»y Lord Augustus Loftus as an address worthy the occasion, and observes with pleasure the well-merited compliment paid by his Excellency to Colonel Richardson and the force under his command. The Pall Mall Gazette rejoices to nee the spirit which throughout has animated the contingent, and points out th.it the new Cabinet hai a splendid opportunity for turning to account in the defence of the Empire the patriotic feeling of the colonies. The writer urges that a well-considered scheme of colonial defence should at once be submitted for the consideration of the \.irious colonies. The <» lobe, regards the demonstration at Sydney as a gratifying testimony of the loyalty and patriotism of the citizens of New South Wales, and furthermore considers the presence of accredited representatives from all the adjoining colonies as an evidence that the force of public opinion is turning in the direction of federation.
